From 1 April 2026 the gold-bond exemption is in section 70(1)(x) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 — the SGB exemption. It covers only an individual who subscribed at original issue and holds the bond to maturity.
Every other exit — an RBI premature redemption even after five years, a sale on the exchange, or maturity for an exchange buyer — is a capital gain. Held more than 12 months it is long-term at 12.5% plus 4% cess; otherwise it is taxed at your slab.
An heir or donee takes the previous holder's cost and holding period. Whether they also keep the maturity exemption is not settled, so we show both readings and pick "Best" on the taxed one.
Window dates are RBI's calendar for Oct 2026–Mar 2027 (press release of ). When a window has passed, the next one is about six months later, on the next interest date.
We use the gold price you type for both the window and maturity, because nobody knows a future price. Coupon interest, surcharge and set-off against your other income are not computed.
