Type your rent once. Get numbered receipts, three to a page, ready for your landlord to sign and your employer to accept.
You hand the receipts to your employer with Form 124 (it replaced Form 12BB) to claim the house rent allowance exemption.
When a tax year's rent is over ₹1 lakh, your landlord's PAN goes on the claim; a landlord without one signs a declaration.
Receipts save tax only under the old regime; under the new regime (the default), house rent allowance is fully taxable.
If any month's rent is over ₹50,000, you deduct 2% tax from the year's last rent payment on the whole year's rent (20% if the landlord has no PAN).
A receipt for more than ₹5,000 paid in cash carries a ₹1 revenue stamp.
Only sign receipts for rent actually paid.
