How this works

A company is an NBFC when financial assets are more than 50% of total assets and financial income is more than 50% of gross income (RBI press release of 8 Apr 1999). From 1 Jul 2026, paragraph 65A of the RBI's 2025 Directions (inserted by the notification of 29 Apr 2026) exempts an NBFC from registration under section 45-IA and the reserve fund under section 45-IC if it has no public funds and no customer interface as a conscious long-term model, its group's such companies hold under ₹1,000 crore, its board resolves so at the start of each year, and it says so in the notes to accounts.

A registered company that qualifies may apply on PRAVAAH by 31 Dec 2026 (paragraph 38A) with the original certificate, three years' audited accounts, a three-year statement, the statutory auditor's certificate and a board resolution; companies that qualify later may apply then. Overseas investment in financial services needs Type I registration; overseas investment in any other business is not allowed for an unregistered company.

Where the RBI text is silent, the tool takes the cautious reading: money from directors or shareholders counts as public funds, and lending to or guaranteeing group companies, directors or shareholders counts as customer interface. The RBI decides each application. The tool does not compute the percentages, decide Core Investment Company status, or file on PRAVAAH.
