Five answers. You get must / should / need not, what it costs or saves you a year in rupees, and a one-page note for your file.
What changed on 1 April 2026. AMCs now pay commission without GST. They add 18% only for a registered distributor who sends a tax invoice — and that distributor pays the 18% on to the government.
So what does registering get you? Only the GST you pay on your own business expenses, which you can then claim back. Against that: monthly returns, and GST on any other business under your PAN.
The ₹20 lakh line. It counts everything under your PAN — mutual-fund and insurance commission, other business, exempt income. In Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura the line is ₹10 lakh. Confirm with your CA
An AMC in another State. That doesn't force you to register while you're under the line — service providers below it are exempt from the inter-State rule (Notification 10/2017-Integrated Tax). Confirm with your CA
Insurance only. If insurance commission is all you earn, you need not register at all — the insurer pays the GST (Notification 5/2017-Central Tax).
Composition. A composition registration issues a bill of supply, not a tax invoice, so the AMC adds nothing — and you pay composition tax on the commission. Confirm with your CA
What this page does not do. It doesn't work out cancelling a registration or leaving composition — that is a separate question for your CA.
Your answer
