Why these rules
  • Passing a group: 40 in each paper and 150 of 300 in all.
  • Earning an exemption: 60 or more in a paper, in an attempt where you sat the whole group and did not pass it.
  • A running exemption lasts for the next three exams, and its actual marks count in full in your aggregate.
  • Making it permanent is open once it runs out, in one window on SSP, one chance only. The paper is then counted as 50 (the rest is lost), you need 50 in every other paper, and you cannot earn a new exemption in that group. Two exemptions: both or neither.
  • Surrender (online on SSP → Exam Functions since 31 Jul 2026, including a permanent exemption) means you re-sit the paper and all three papers count at their new marks.
  • Check with your CA / ICAI: these follow ICAI's guidelines and announcements as reproduced by several sources; the amended regulation text (21 Jun 2023) could not be read. ICAI has not said whether a surrender can be undone, or whether a fresh exemption can be earned while a temporary one runs.
